How THC and CBD Can Benefit Hair

Concerned about hair loss, or just want to grow your hair faster? There are many ways to influence hair growth, but cannabis is one potentially effective option you may not have considered.
Both CBD and THC come from the cannabis plant, and they can both support hair health. But they aren't the same, and key differences could influence how you use them to benefit your hair.
What are CBD and THC?
CBD and THC are two of the most well known among more than 100 cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. CBD is more well known for therapeutic properties, while THC is known for its euphoric high. But when it comes to hair, cannabis is all about what it can do for improving your hair health.
Both THC and CBD are sources from the cannabis plant, but they come from different types of cannabis plants. CBD is sourced from the hemp plant, which has only trace amounts of THC. THC, on the other hand, is sourced from the marijuana plant, and may have varying amounts of CBD.
What CBD Can Do For Hair
In general, CBD offers calming properties. For your mind, body, and yes, even your hair. It can help your hair if it's stressed out, whether that's from actual emotional stress, or stress that affects your hair, like scalp irritation, dye, pollution, or heat.
CBD oil, which is typically used in CBD beauty products, has amino acids, and antioxidants including vitamins A, C, and E. With amino acids and antioxidants, CBD oil can cut down on breakage, make hair look thicker, and can even protect and treat hair from environmental pollutants and damage. With essential fatty acids including Omega 3, 6, and 9, CBD oil can help hair stay healthy and shiny.
CBD is known for calming and regenerating skin, and that extends to scalp health as well. If you have scalp irritation, CBD could help calm it down, possibly due to its anti-inflammatory properties. It could also help with dry scalp with its moisture, as it formed from essential fatty acids. And by absorbing fatty acids into the scalp, CBD could stimulate and enhance hair growth.
What THC Can Do For Hair
THC works similarly, in that THC can offer an overall calming effect for your hair and scalp. Typically, THC is more valuable as a treatment for hair loss. Understanding how THC helps starts with knowing what causes hair loss.
Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a hormone that influences hair growth. When you have too much DHT, hair growth may be reduced. This happens because DHT shrinks hair follicles. While most over the counter hair loss treatments target lowering DHT levels, there is also emerging evidence that DHT can promote hair growth.
THC can target DHT, lowering its amount and effectiveness to slow down or stop hair loss. In fact, endocrinology research has found that treatment with THC and other cannabinoids could prevent DHT from binding to hormone receptors.
Additionally, like CBD, THC can reduce the inflammation and irritation of the scalp and hair follicles, which can lead to hair loss.
Using CBD and THC For Hair Health
Using CBD and THC both inside and out can be supportive of hair health. Applying CBD products to your hair and scalp can offer moisture, fight pollution, and reduce stress and hair loss. And if emotional stress is an issue that's causing hair loss, ingesting cannabis products, such as CBD oil or THC, could potentially relieve stress and anxiety to help with hair.
